The price tag for replacing the 25,000 sq. ft. roof is estimated to be $1.5 million. This includes all those items that are addressed at the same time like downspouts, gutters, and snow guards.
There was a long list of much needed interior functional improvements that had to take priority. We knew that we could patch the roof for a few years until we could raise the money to restore the roof to its original condition using slate.
While we have explored all roofing material options, we have an opportunity to make a longer term investment in a public building that has served the Lancaster community well for over 127 years. In multiple studies, local residents cite the Lancaster Central Market building as the most important preservation project in the City. And the Lancaster Central Market Trust agrees!
Yes. As with the interior renovations, Market will remain open during the roof replacement.

The City, as owner of the Lancaster Central Market Building, will oversee the project.
Central Market Trust was created in 2006 to manage the operations of Lancaster Central Market and to implement the Central Market Master Plan. Citizen volunteers along with representatives from the City of Lancaster and Lancaster County Planning Commission make up a unique private/public partnership focused on being guardians of our beloved market. Both public and private money will be utilized to restore the roof.
The City is planning on commencing the work in the Fall of 2017. Of course, much will depend on your contributions!
The advice we have been provided with by those involved in the project is to anticipate about six months for the renovations.
Please give a gift to the Lancaster Central Market Trust “Raise The Roof” Campaign. Pledges can be made over five years and all gifts are tax deductible.
